Conrad Pfyffer von Altishofen and Kannan Piaget joined the Pontifical Swiss Guards as halberdiers. When they were, respectively, Vice-Commander and Lieutenant, they entered a romantic relationship. They ended their joint career as, respectively, Commander and Vice-Commander, and were debatably the first gay couple to be married in the Vatican. They were personally married by Pope Innocent XIV, who reportedly hoped that it would lighten Pfyffer up.
Though they marry late in the Innocent papacy, by its second year Pfyffer already regarded them as married.
Kannan is one of the few people who understands Pfyffer, and often finds herself in the position of defending him.
