Father Heinrich-Josef "Joop" Meier, much like one Jesus Christ, is both a retired carpenter and a current shepherd and scruffy-looking, wisdom-dispensing, do-gooder.
Biography
Early Life
Joop was, theoretically, raised by his mother. In practice, he raised both himself and his younger (and taller) brother, Manni (Manfred). Since the age of two or three he'd wanted to be a priest, but was told that wasn't for his family. He worked as a carpenter, then studied engineering for a year before working as an emergency medic. He often spent time with his friends Tosh (Theresia Doemke, an engineer), Gerhard (Gerhard Güneş, who studied social work and works in a different department[1]), and Seb (a talented artist).
Priesthood
He was taken under the wing of Willem Mandorff, who encouraged him to attend seminary. He also quit drinking. Tragically, his friend Seb died, sending a letter to Joop before he did. Joop dedicated himself to investigating, and would stop at nothing and nowhere to get justice. This took him to the Vatican...
Vatican
...right in time to be in the vicinity of the conclave attacks. His hands were badly burnt from pulling a bystander from their burning car, and he spent some time in hospital and in physical therapy. Eventually, he was offered a position working directly for the Holy See, which, for some reason, he took. He befriended Elias Beaumont in those dang hallways and punched a priest, in that order. He also aquired two queerplatonic partners (Elias and Tosh), and introduced his little brother to the Pope (sort of).
Personality
Joop is no-nonsense, unpretentious, and dedicated. He, to quote Sybil Ramkin, is "not a gentleman, thank goodness, but a gentle man." He doesn't like authority or finery. He calls Pope Innocent XIV, who he regards as a friend, by his baptismal name. His favourite Star Trek film is The Voyage Home.
Appearance
Joop has scruffy brown hair and likes to wear jeans and a battered green jacket. He rarely wears a Roman collar, finding them difficult to breathe in. His hands have visible burn scars and a tremor.
