Biography

Early Years

She was born to a Dinka father and Kikongo mother. She studied nursing and entered an order.

MCANH

With Bishop Benítez, she established the Marie-Clémentine Anuarite Nengapeta Hospital, and served as its administrator. She lived in Bukavu. At some point, she is rumoured to have threatened soldiers with a gun to defend people under her care, despite this being a breach of international law and professional standards as a nurse. During this time, she and Benítez also quietly and 'under the counter' supported the use of contraceptives.

The Vatican

By the time of the Angelus shooting, Josephine had theoretically retired from working with the hospital, although she volunteered in deference to her vows. She flew to Vatican City to visit her friend while he recovered from his injuries. While she was in the Vatican, Bukavu came under attack and she was unable to return home. She agreed to stay in the Vatican, living in the Casa Santa Marta, in solidarity with her friend Vincent, who could also no longer return to his former dioceses in circumstances of instability.

Personality

Josephine is stubborn, optimistic, and forceful. She is deeply caring and will stop at little to protect 'her girls'.

Appearance

Josephine is tall, thin and sprightly. She has dark brown skin, dark brown eyes, and wears liputa. She has short silver hair and usually wears a headscarf.
