Hans Leutzinger is the Commander of the Pontifical Swiss Guard.
Biography
Pius XIII
As the commander under Pius XIII, Leutzinger was forced to retake his oath, and oversee the retaking of the oath, alongside the rest of the Pontifical Swiss Guard. He was also one of the officers who met with Giuliano de' Medici and Sofonisba Anguissola after their miraculous reappearance in the 21st century. Leutzinger came to revere Pius, and later kept a prayer card of him in his office.
Conclave Attacks
During the conclave attacks, when the gendarmerie tried to breach the sanctity of the Sistine Chapel to secure its occupants, Leutzinger held the door with his rapier, something which earned the admiration of his men, amazement of the gendarmerie, and, later, the approval of the new Pope Innocent.
Innocent XIV
Leutzinger grew to become friends with Innocent, moving to first-name terms with him after the Angelus shooting.
Retirement
Leutzinger realised he needed to retire when, one day walking through the Apostolic Palace with Innocent, the pope stumbled and Leutzinger hurt his back when steadying him. In retirement, he remained active, participated in the training of halberdiers, and frequently visited with his friends (including former colleagues and the Pope).
He outlived Innocent XIV.
Personality
Leutinger is best characterised as 'stern but fair,' and as a gentleman. He greatly enjoys opera and Beethoven. His favourite opera is Fidelio. He critiques Tosca's depiction of the Pontifical Swiss Guard. He thinks very highly of his men*, and both thinks and expects the best of them.
When he realised his counterpart in the gendarmerie was lesbian, he quietly acted as a secret-keeper for her and her wife, including at least once bodily shielding them from view.
He runs every morning, and keeps a plush of Luce on his desk.
Appearance
Leutzinger is tall, with slightly greying dark hair. His eyes, when he is surprised or ill-tempered, are in the habit of flashing.
