The Guided Tour

You are met by a young-looking Vulcan in Medical subdivision uniform, with a black thermal shirt under the light blue short sleeves. You remember that Vulcan is a hot planet, and this ship doesn't feel particularly hot, so far. The ambient temperature must be set a bit cooler than would be most comfortable for Vulcan crewmembers.

Your guide greets you with the ta'al.

"We are honoured by your presence. I am Rahm. I come to serve."

The short sleeves of their uniform shirt don't fit any cuff-braiding, but their Delta insignia is gold, backed in light yellow - they're a commissioned officer. Their collar has new-fangled rank pips, which show you the exact rank: Rahm is a Lieutenant, Junior Grade. This is the second most junior rank of commissioned officer in Starfleet, after 'ensign.' You suppose you should be flattered you were deemed fitting to have a guide with a commission. Or maybe Rahm was just bored. Did Vulcans get bored?

Above their Starfleet delta is a pin of the IDIC. It looks made to match the slightly older rank insignias, from the thankfully-discarded uniform the Admiralty briefly tried to put everyone in. That thing had a ruff collar. Nobody had been able to stand it for very long, even the Admiralty. They must've gotten their commission then - around about the time that Spock had been declared KIA and then returned. That had been a big diplomatic mess. A lot of Vulcans had been turned off joining Starfleet, and some quit. If heroes of the Age of Exploration and the Ambassador's son didn't get their culture respected, what was supposed to happen to the rank and file? Well, obviously Rahm had stuck it out.

Before you can say anything, Sshasek interjects.

"Excusse me. I have suppliess to transport."

Rahm dips their head forward in a nod, beckoning you, and addresses the transport chief as you both move to leave, briefly hoding up the ta'al again.

"Of course. Dif-tor heh smusma."

The Universal Translator doesn't translate everything, then. Sshasek nods back, already tapping on the keys of their workstation's panels.

"Ssochya eh Dif."

As you leave, you hear a transporter activate.

Onward.
